چکیده

The bonding strength between dissimilar materials in composites is often relatively weak. Interface debonding and cracking are of common occurrence. As an e€ ective method to minimize such failures, ® bre stitching is used to enhance the bonding strength when joining layers in polymer composites. With the presence of the reinforcing ® bre, the overall elastic response for each component of the composite is, in general, anisotropic. This paper investigates the elastic behaviour of bridged interface cracks in anisotropic bimaterials. From the equilibrium of the interface crack, a system of Cauchy integral equations for the required distributed dislocation density is obtained. When the bridging force depends linearly on the crack-opening displacement, explicit solutions are given in terms of a series of Jacobi polynomials. For illustration, a bridged interface crack in isotropic bimaterials is examined in detail. Results suggest that bridging ® bres e€ ectively enhance the toughness of the composite. When the bridging force increases, the e€ ect of interface mismatch becomes insigni® cant, being overshadowed by the e€ ect of the bridging forces. }

Singular Perturbation Solutions of a Class of Systems of Singular Integral Equations

A new class of systems of strongly singular integrodifferential equations is examined, which emerges in the study of the bridged interface crack growth, e.g., in fiber stitched layered composites. This work generalizes the asymptotic analysis of strongly singular integral equations by Willis and Nemat-Nasser [Quart. Appl. Math., 48 (1990), pp. 741–753]. Singular perturbation solutions up to the...

Screw dislocation interacting with interface and interfacial cracks in piezoelectric bimaterials

Interface and interfacial cracks interacting with screw dislocations in piezoelectric bimaterials subjected to antiplane mechanical and in-plane electrical loadings are studied within the framework of linear piezoelectricity theory. Straight dislocations with the Burgers vector normal to the isotropic basal plane near the interface or interfacial crack are considered. The dislocations are chara...

Multiple cracks in thermoelectroelastic bimaterials

The formulation for thermal stress and electric displacement in an in®nite thermopiezoelectric plate with an interface and multiple cracks is presented. Using Green's function approach and the principle of superposition, a system of singular integral equations for the unknown temperature discontinuity de®ned on each crack face is developed and solved numerically. Crack path selection in piezoelectric bimaterials

The problem of crack path selection in piezoelectric bimaterials is considered in this paper. Based on the Stroh formulation for anisotropic material and GreenÕs functions for piezoelectric bimaterials, the crack problem is expressed in terms of coupled singular integral equations at ®rst, and then the equations are used to solve for stress and electric displacement ®elds numerically. A crack i...
